Crash Data System

Florida’s Crash Data System contains information compiled by law enforcement officers at the scene of a traffic crash. Information in the system includes:

  • Person type (driver, occupant, pedestrian, etc.);
  • Number and severity of injuries;
  • Violation of traffic law;
  • Time of day, day of week;
  • Alcohol and/or drug impairment;
  • Latitude and longitude of the crash location;
  • Vehicle characteristics;
  • Event characteristics (manner of the collision, number of vehicles involved, direction of travel); and
  • Environment (weather conditions).

Data from this system helps determine the number of alcohol-related crashes; the involvement of vulnerable road users such as bicyclists, pedestrians, teens, and older road users; and what is the interaction with other components including the time, weather, and driver behavior. Information on Florida's Crash Data System is maintained by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).

Roadway Characteristics Inventory

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Roadway Characteristics Inventory Handbook has information on all public roads in the State, including:

  • Roadway location;
  • Classification (freeway, secondary road, arterial, etc.);
  • Physical characteristics (two lane, multi-lane, shoulders, etc.);
  • Traffic information (volume); and
  • Traffic control device inventory.

Additional information is available through the FDOT Unified Roadway Basemap Repository, a project funded by the TRCC, to develop a standard, comprehensive transportation network that could be used throughout the State, and shared across jurisdictional boundaries through multiagency involvement and coordination.

Drivers License System

Information on licensed drivers in Florida is managed by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Driver records include:

  • Personal identification (age, date of birth, gender, ethnicity);
  • Driver restrictions;
  • Driver history (convictions);
  • Court dismissals/reductions;
  • Type and status of license;
  • Collision involvement;
  • Pending citations; and
  • Driver improvement/training.

Vehicle Registration System

FLHSMV’s General Reports and Statistics resource page contains information on all vehicles registered in Florida. Data include:

  • Vehicle description (make, model, color, etc.);
  • Owner information (name, home address, mailing address);
  • License plate number;
  • Registration information (fees paid, registration period); and
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Citation/Adjudication System

The FLHSMV Crash and Citation Reports and Statistics page has information on traffic citations, arrests, and the final disposition of the offense through the court system. Citation information includes:

  • Violation class;
  • Date and time; and
  • Court of jurisdiction.

Prehospital EMS Tracking and Reporting System

Prehospital EMS Tracking and Reporting System (EMSTARS) includes patient information that is collected at the scene of a crash and in route to a hospital. Data include:

  • Unit/agency information;
  • Incident times;
  • Situation & scene information;
  • Patient care (vital signs, injury assessment, trauma score, procedures); and
  • Outcome & disposition.

Florida Trauma Registry

The Florida Trauma Registry website includes data for injured patients treated at a Florida trauma center. Data includes:

  • Patient information;
  • Injury & diagnosis information;
  • Prehospital information;
  • Emergency & ICU;
  • Procedures;
  • Complications;
  • Outcome & disposition;
  • Quality improvement; and
  • Financial.
